Information
Polyvinylpyrrolidone, commonly abbreviated as PVP, is a polymer compound formed by the polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. This white, hygroscopic powder is odorless or has a faint odor. It is soluble in water, ethanol, chloroform, and most organic solvents but insoluble in diethyl ether. PVP exhibits low toxicity.
Applications:
Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare:
• Binder in pharmaceutical formulations
• Co-precipitating agent
• Solubilizing agent or crystallization inhibitor in injectables
• Coating or film-forming agent
• Sustained-release agent for controlled drug delivery, extending therapeutic duration
• Ocular prostheses and artificial corneas
• Surgical dressings
• PVP-Iodine disinfectants
Additionally used as a colorant and X-ray contrast agent. Applicable to tablets, granules, solutions, etc., it demonstrates detoxification, hemostasis, solubility enhancement, prevention of peritoneal adhesions, and promotion of erythrocyte sedimentation.
Food Processing:
• Clarifying and stabilizing agent for beer, fruit juices, wine, and other beverages.
Cosmetics & Personal Care:
• Acts as a protective colloid in emulsions for both fatty and non-fatty ointments
• Fixative in styling lotions, hairsprays, and styling mousses
• Opacifier in hair conditioners
• Foam stabilizer in shampoos
• Dispersant and adhesion promoter in hair dyes
• Curl retention enhancer
• Enhances moisture retention and lubricity in creams, sunscreens, and depilatories.
Industrial Applications:
• Widely used in coatings, plastics, resins, glass fibers, printing inks, adhesives, tablet compression, and textile dyeing.
• Its downstream application as a lithium battery additive is rapidly expanding.
